Part 3. Reading – My Most Unexpected Journey

Last year, something happened that completely changed the way I think about traveling. Visiting Iceland became not only a personal achievement, but also an important milestone in my life. I had always dreamed of this destination, but for many years I either didn’t have enough time or felt it was too expensive. I kept telling myself, “One day I’ll go,” but that day never came.

Then, one evening in March, while scrolling through flight offers, I found a surprisingly cheap ticket. I stared at the screen and felt a mix of excitement and fear. Booking the flight felt like a real challenge, but I decided to take the risk. I wanted to overcome my doubts and finally accomplish something I had been postponing for years. It was the beginning of an unexpected journey and the first truly spontaneous trip I had ever taken.

When I arrived in Iceland, the weather was cold and windy, nothing like the sunny images I had seen online. Still, the scenery was breathtaking. On my first day, I went to see two massive waterfalls that looked almost unreal. The sound of the water was overwhelming, and I felt completely present in the moment. On the second day, I climbed a small mountain and watched the sun rise over the snowy landscape. Later that night, I finally saw the northern lights. It was an unforgettable experience and without doubt the highlight of the entire trip.

During my stay, I lived in a small guesthouse with travelers from all over the world. Every evening, people gathered in the shared kitchen to cook simple meals and exchange stories. I met a couple from Germany who had been traveling for months and a student from Japan who had saved money for years just to explore Europe and beyond. Listening to their stories helped me understand how many different reasons people have for traveling.

One evening, I spoke with a woman named Maria, whose story stayed with me long after the trip ended. She described a long journey across South America that completely changed her perspective on life. After returning home, she quit her job and started her own online business. What impressed me most was how calm and confident she seemed. Her experience showed me how travel can be truly life-changing, not just exciting.

Since that trip, I have visited several new places, but Iceland remains my most important milestone. It was more than a holiday — it was proof that I can face uncertainty and grow from it. That single decision opened the door to new possibilities and changed how I see the world.
